About the Latest Listeria Recall
The recall is actually a large expansion of an initial sunflower seeds recall that was issued a few weeks ago. At this point, products that were sold under the brand names of Planters and Sunrich Naturals that were made between the dates of February 1 and April 21 are part of this recall. These sunflower seeds were produced by a company in Minnesota known as SunOpta. The first sunflower seeds recall concerned products produced between February 1 and February 19, 2016. The expanded recall concerns product produced between February 20 and April 21, 2016, which is the date that SunOpta ceased production of these products.
In addition, Papa John’s Salad and Produce, Inc. has initiated its own voluntary listeria recall of its Oriental Salad with Sesame Ginger Dressing product that is sold in several different retail outlets. The company is concerned that these salads may be affected by the recall. The sell-by dates for these salad products are between May 18 and May 25. The FDA actually issued two separate announcements with regards to this listeria recall. One of the announcements can be found here and another can be found here. The salad products were sold at retail outlets including:
- Albertson’s/Safeway
- Basha’s
- Food 4 Less
Fortunately, no reports of illness have arisen with regards to this recall.
Suggestions for Consumers
Clearly, the first suggestion for any consumer who may be affected by this listeria recall is to check your supply of sunflower seeds. Any products affected by this situation should not be consumed under any circumstances. These products can be returned to the retail outlet from where they were purchased for a refund. Of course, anyone who has consumed these sunflower seeds and who has become ill should seek medical attention as soon as possible, as listeriosis, the condition caused by exposure to listeria, can be very dangerous.
